Debate，来源于拉丁文debatĕre，在英语中有争论，讨论的意思。
1、作为名词，它有两层意思：
（1）指一场有议题的争论活动，经过有组织有章程的交流，最终可得出结论。

（2）指争论的过程，是形容词debate的动词形式。
例句：We debated foreign policy for hours and hours last night.
2、作为动词，它的意思是进行讨论，争论，吹捧，辩论。

3、作为形容词，它的意思是意见不一的，存在争议的。
