Yearn是个很有感情色彩的动词，它可以描述某种思念、感情、希望或者渴望，尤其指因想念而产生的强烈的情感。它常常用来表达一种美好而又冲动的情感，而这种情感往往又是不可抗拒的。
Yearn通常用作及物动词，接介词宾语，后面可以接名词、代词、动名词或者动词不定式。例如：
1. She yearns for home.
她渴望回家。
2. I yearn to make the most of my life.
我渴望充分利用我的生命。
3. We all yearn for peace.
我们都渴望和平。
4. We yearn to reach the top of the mountain.
我们渴望登上那座山顶。
Yearn也可以用作不及物动词，意为“强烈地渴望”，此时后面不能接宾语，而是常和形容词连用，表示“强烈地渴望……”。例如：
He yearns desperately to go home.
