Carrier gas is the name used for the inert gasses used to sweep the mobile phase in gas chromatography. The purpose of the carrier gas is to move the sample components through the column and to act as a heat transfer medium.

Common carrier gases used in gas chromatography are helium, nitrogen, and hydrogen. The carrier gas should be chosen on the basis of the type of detector and depending on whether the column will be operated under isothermal or temperature-programmed conditions.
