tornado是英语中的一个单词，来源于意大利文“tornare”，意思是“旋转”。它是一种强烈的旋转气流，属于恶劣的天气现象，通常伴有强烈的风暴，同时也伴有雷电及冰雹，且移动迅速。
tornado一般包含有一个旋转的中心区域(eye wall)及一个旋转的预警区域(debris)，横向风速可达每小时100m或以上，纵向风速可达每小时160m或以上。
它常伴有大量物体穿梭其中，甚至摧毁房屋等大型建筑，造成极大的灾害和影响，是一种极度恶劣的灾害。
